Enhancing Public Health & Wellness with Falun Gong

(Presented online at the 7th Public Health Conference on March 16-18, 2021. Case reports shows that practicing Falun Gong is beneficial for enhancing public health and wellness.)

ABSTRACT

A cost-free and natural self-care practice of Falun Gong meditation could be the alternative approach for enhancing public health and wellness.

Severe chronic conditions are incurable medical issues that affect quality of life for individuals. These chronic ailments are an economic burden for society and country. Moreover, long-term uses of drugs often lead to complications.

Enhancing Public Health & Wellness: Aim

The objective of this presentation is to illustrate the effectiveness of Falun Gong on patients with different severe chronic conditions.

Using three case examples from clinical/medical settings in Vietnam, the presenters show how Falun Gong can help enhance public health and wellness in the community.

Case Reports

The first case was a 28-year-old woman with right iliac fossa region pain. For two years, the patient tried to conceive but without success. She became pregnant twice consecutively. However, both pregnancies ended in spontaneous abortion. Gynecologic exams showed she had pelvic inflammatory disease. Patient also suffered from stress and anxiety. After 8 months of practicing Falun Gong, patient became pregnant and later gave birth to a baby.

The second case study was a 50-year-old woman with recurring fever, accompanied by weight loss and fatigue. She was diagnosed with autoimmune thyroiditis and treated by long-term corticoid. Her symptoms reduced after she attended the Falun Gong 9-day seminar. The symptoms completely disappeared after practicing Falun Gong for 6 months.

The third case study was a 63-year-old woman diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Patient’s general status was so poor that the oncologist decided to refuse treatment. She went home, depressed. However, after one week of practicing Falun Gong, she felt better. Four months later she returned to the hospital for a follow-up visit. To everyone’s surprise, her test result show negative for malignancy. It has been 4 years from then, and she is living a healthy life.

Enhancing Public Health with Falun Gong

All 3 patients reported symptoms reduction or disappearance shortly after starting Falun Gong meditation practice. Their lifestyle change and following the principles of Zhen-Shan-Ren (or Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance in English) helped to maintain the treatment effect and long-term health of the patients. It can thus be said that practicing Falun Gong helps to enhance public health and wellness.

Falun Gong is free-of-charge and easy to learn; it is the solution of choice to nurture good behaviors resulting in better health and wellness for the community.

Popularizing Falun Gong in the Vietnamese communities and the global societies should be one for public health consideration.

Takeaway

These case reports demonstrate that Falun Gong has a powerful and beneficial effect on patients with chronic diseases.

Reciting Falun Gong Mantra Helps People Cope with COVID-19

The Wuhan coronavirus continues to spread rampantly. There have been reports of people with COVID-19 symptoms who improved or fully recovered after reciting the Nine True Words (NTW) or mantra from Falun Gong.

We conducted a retrospective study to explore the effectiveness of reciting the NTW against COVID-19. Thirty-six cases from six ethnic groups and six countries were identified.

Patients reported respiratory symptoms, fever, coughing, dyspnea or breathing difficulties, and/or neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms, with symptoms ranging from mild, moderate to severe. Nearly 50% received hospital treatment and medications that were either ineffective or initially effective and followed by relapse or worsening of symptoms.

All 36 cases experienced symptom improvement, while 72% fully recovered after reciting the NTW. Median improvement time was one day and three days for recovery.

Three critically ill patients recovered completely or improved significantly after reciting the NTW, two of them had given up hospital treatment before they recited the NTW.

Reciting the Falun Gong mantra is easy to learn and not conflicting with conventional treatment. This study offers hope and a unique way to reframe, rebuild, and reconnect with our spiritual self by exploring an alternative to health and wellbeing during a pandemic crisis.

Using Falun Gong for Achieving Peace and Conflict Resolution

The need for peacebuilding and conflict resolution in our society is crucial. This is because no two individuals or parties see things in exactly the same way. Misunderstandings and conflicts are bound to arise.

There is a growing need for an alternative spiritual model for peace building, conflict management, and conflict resolution. Since time memorial, people from different cultures have sought spiritual teachings to achieve harmony and resolve conflicts.

Falun Gong, an ancient Chinese discipline, with its roots in Buddhist and Taoist philosophies, serves as one such mind-body spiritual intervention way.

Falun Gong’s teachings and its three principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance, are qualities recognized by all spiritual traditions and which can be embraced by people from all walks of life for achieving peace and conflict resolution.

This presentation offers knowledge and insight into the mindful way of Falun Gong. It ventures to show how Falun Gong can be used for peace-building and conflict resolution in three settings — personal life, workplace, and societal or public domain.

Spirituality is becoming a progressively prevalent theme in counseling and psychotherapy. It is considered the fifth force in counseling psychology and can no longer be ignored in the therapeutic realm.

As therapists, we are increasingly aware that a spiritually integrated approach can offer deep, lasting benefits and ensure a culturally sensitive and ethical practice. Numerous studies have indicated a positive link between spirituality and health, wellness, and resilience.

Spirituality has been described as the heart and soul of therapy—the focus of “empathy and care, the pulse of compassion, the vital flow of practice wisdom, and the driving energy” (Canda & Furman, 2010, p3).

In recent years, there has been growing interest in mind-body therapies that embrace various aspects of the spirituality.

Role of Falun Gong

Like the mindfulness-based approaches in the cognitive behavioral tradition, Falun Gong, an ancient Chinese spiritual discipline with elements from Buddhist and Taoist teachings, can be successfully blended as an intervention or self-help strategy when working with diverse individuals.

Client connection with Falun Gong is frequently linked with positive change and improvement. Implementing a spiritually integrated approach with Falun Gong can be an effective and appropriate intervention with some clients.

Overall, integrating spirituality with counseling and therapy can help clients to connect with themselves, others, and contribute toward a common good.

This presentation introduces the therapeutic impact of Falun Gong, with case examples from studies by the author.
